Subspecies
Sometimes considered to include Black-spotted Piculet (Picumnus nigropunctatus), but the two are vocally different. Subspecies pallidus sometimes considered a separate species, or treated as a subspecies of Guianan Piculet (Picumnus minutissimus), but appears very close morphologically to other forms of present species. Form previously listed as "Picumnus leucogaster", described from R Cauamé (Roraima), is a synonym of nominate spilogaster, further sampling having shown complete gradation towards typical spilogaster and possibly represents a link between nominate and orinocensis, showing some intermediate features.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
orinocensis Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1950 - Central Venezuela, from south-eastern Apure eastern along R Meta and R Orinoco to Delta Amacuro.
spilogaster Sundevall, 1866 - Northern parts of the Guianas, and northern Brazil (Roraima).
pallidus Snethlage, E, 1924 - North-eastern Brazil in eastern Pará (Belém area).
