Proposed subspecies australoabyssinicus (described from Yavello, in southern Ethiopia) is treated as synonym of nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• arnaudi (Bonaparte, 1851)   -  Western and southern Sudan, extreme southern Ethiopia, eastern Uganda, and western and central Kenya south to north-western Tanzania.
• dorsalis (Reichenow, 1887)   -  Northern, central and eastern Tanzania.
• australoabyssinicus Benson, 1942   -  Southern Ethiopia.
