Subspecies
Genus sometimes placed in sparrow family (Passeridae).
Proposed subspecies australoabyssinicus (described from Yavello, in southern Ethiopia) is treated as synonym of nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
arnaudi (Bonaparte, 1851) - Western and southern Sudan, extreme southern Ethiopia, eastern Uganda, and western and central Kenya south to north-western Tanzania.
dorsalis (Reichenow, 1887) - Northern, central and eastern Tanzania.
