Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Chestnut-shouldered Bush-sparrow (Gymnoris xanthocollis), and sometimes treated as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pallida Neumann, 1908 - Southern Mauritania and western Senegal east, very patchily, to central Sudan.
pyrgita (Heuglin, 1862) - Eritrea, south-eastern Sudan, southern Ethiopia and Somalia south to north-eastern Uganda, Kenya and northern Tanzania.
