Subspecies
Relationships uncertain. Has been considered to form a superspecies with Black-crowned Sparrow-Lark (Eremopterix nigriceps) on basis of male plumage patterns.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
melanocephalus (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1823) - Senegal east to central Sudan.
madaraszi (Reichenow, 1902) - North-eastern Uganda, Kenya, coastal southern Somalia, Tanzania and northern Mozambique.
hoeschi White, CMN, 1959 - Southern Angola, western Zambia, northern Namibia, northern Botswana and north-western Zimbabwe.
smithi (Bonaparte, 1850) - Eastern Zambia, southern Malawi, western and central Mozambique, eastern Zimbabwe, eastern Botswana and eastern South Africa.
