Subspecies
No subspecies.
Has been suggested as forming a superspecies with Rusty Lark (Mirafra rufa) and Gillett's Lark (Mirafra gilletti). However, genetic data indicate that it belongs in the Calendulauda clade. Geographical variation in plumage tone, darkest and richest in south. Birds from extreme north of range (south-eastern Sudan east to southern Somalia) described as subspecies australoabyssinica and others from rest of range (except northern and eastern Kenya) as massaica, but differences minimal, and naming of subspecies considered unwarranted.
