Subspecies
Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with, or even as conspecific with, Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala). Also, sometimes regarded as a subspecies of Subalpine Warbler (Sylvia cantillans), because subspecies rubescens is similar to that species. All are part of a group that also contains Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undata), Marmora's Warbler (Sylvia sarda), Balearic Warbler (Sylvia balearica), Tristram's Warbler (Sylvia deserticola), Spectacled Warbler (Sylvia conspicillata), Sardinian Warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), Ruppell's Warbler (Sylvia ruppeli) and Cyprus Warbler (Sylvia melanothorax). Geographical variation at least partly clinal; nominate subspecies grades into turcmenica in northern Iran, but evidence for intergradation otherwise scant or not conclusive.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- mystacea Ménétries, 1832 - Breeds lower R Volga south to eastern Turkey, south-eastern Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and northern Iran. Non-breeding south to Arabia and north-eastern Africa.
- turcmenica Zarudny & Bilkevitch, 1918 - Breeds southern Turkmenistan and north-eastern Iran, and from southern Kazakhstan, central and eastern Uzbekistan and western Tajikistan south to northern Afghanistan, also western Pakistan (north-western Baluchistan). Non-breeding south to Arabia and north-eastern Africa.
- rubescens Blanford, 1874 - Breeds from south-eastern Turkey south to northern Syria, Iraq and western Iran. Non-breeding south to Arabia and north-eastern Africa.
