Forms a superspecies with Sennar Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus punctifrons), Yellow Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus parvulus), Grey Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus caroli) and Cape Penduline-Tit (Anthoscopus minutus).

Birds from Kenya have been separated as a geographical subspecies guasso on the basis of rather greyer plumage compared with birds from farther north, but age-related feather wear could be responsible for such apparent differences.
