Subspecies
Smaller birds from northern Kenya and adjacent southern Ethiopia described as subspecies horrensis and possibly merits recognition, but further study required.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

albicapillus (Blyth, 1856) - Eastern.
horrensis (Keith, 1964) - Kenya (northern edge of Dida Galgulu Desert north to Ethiopian border).
