Forest and wooded thickets, favouring a canopy and sub-canopy of mature fruiting trees.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Trapping and clearing of coastal forests are the main threats.

A fragile platform composed of twigs placed in a tree 3-10 m above the ground.

Incubation: 22 - 23 days

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Livingstone's Turaco (Tauraco livingstonii), Schalow's Turaco (Tauraco schalowi), Knysna Turaco (Tauraco corythaix), Black-billed Turaco (Tauraco schuettii) and Green Turaco (Tauraco persa), a complex of allopatric forms formerly treated variably either as a single polytypic species or as three, five or six species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

fischeri (Reichenow, 1878) - Southern Somalia, coastal Kenya (inland along R Tana to Bura), and north-eastern Tanzania from eastern Usambaras south to R Wami.
zanzibaricus Pakenham, 1938 - Zanzibar.
