Sierra de Perijá (Colombia / Venezuela border), and Andes of western Venezuela (southern from Trujillo) south to Colombia (Norte de Santander; locally in western and central ranges), Ecuador (southern on western slope to Pichincha, on eastern slope locally to Loja), and on eastern slope south to Peru (on Piuraâ€"Cajamarca border, and locally from Amazonas south to Huánuco).

Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been merged with Euphonia. Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that both genera belong in family Fringillidae.
