Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic data do not support monophyly of genus as currently constituted: six of eight species sampled embedded with Tangara, a finding that makes genus Tangara paraphyletic. Appears to be most closely related to Pipraeidea and Iridosornis, not Tangara. Geographical variation in plumage substantial. Subspecies darwinii is dullest and sometimes considered a separate species, also differing somewhat in song from others. Further study is needed.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- darwinii (Bonaparte, 1838) - Andes of Ecuador (from southern Carchi, Imbabura and extreme western Napo south, mainly in central highlands, to Loja), and in Peru southern on western slope to northern Chile (Tarapacá) and on eastern slope to Bolivia (La Paz). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Green-mantled Tanager (Pipraeidea darwinii).
- composita Zimmer, JT, 1944 - Central Bolivia (Cochabamba and Santa Cruz).
- schulzei Brodkorb, 1938 - South-eastern Bolivia, extreme western Paraguay and north-western Argentina (south to Mendoza, La Pampa, and San Antonio Oeste, in northern Río Negro).
- bonariensis (Gmelin, 1789) - South-eastern Brazil (southern Sío Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay and eastern Argentina (south to Buenos Aires province).
