Subspecies
Genus sometimes considered to belong with New World warbler family (Parulidae), but recent molecular-genetic data support placement in present family. This species has in the past been placed variously in Chlorospingus and in Hemispingus. Appears closer to latter in morphology, feeding behaviour and vocalizations, and close relationship supported by molecular-genetic data. Southern subspecies chrysogaster, which differs from nominate in plumage and size, but is similar to it in behaviour, has been considered a separate species.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • rubrirostris (Lafresnaye, 1840)   -  Southern end of Andes in western Venezuela (southern Táchira) and generally in Andes of Colombia and north-western and eastern Ecuador.
  • chrysogaster (Taczanowski, 1875)   -  Andes of north-western and eastern Peru (Piura; Amazonas south to Junín); western Bolivia (near Tokoaque, in La Paz). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Golden-bellied Tanager (Cnemoscopus chrysogaster).
