Subspecies
Placement in genus Niltava has been considered more appropriate for this species. Forms a superspecies with Blue-fronted Flycatcher (Cyornis hoevelli) and Matinan Flycatcher (Cyornis sanfordi). Population on Roti (off south-western Timor) may belong to an as yet undescribed subspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
kuehni Hartert, 1904 - Wetar, in eastern Lesser Sundas.
hyacinthinus (Temminck, 1820) - Timor, Roti and Semau, in eastern Lesser Sundas.
