Subspecies
No obvious close relatives. Racial identity of population in central Falcón, in Venezuela, uncertain. Presumed to belong with subspecies colombianum. Nominate subspecies varies clinally in size, with smallest birds farthest south. Species name often spelt "rufus", but must agree with neuter gender of genus.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
panerythrum Sclater, PL, 1862 - Highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama (east to western Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro), and central and eastern Andes of Colombia (Antioquia, Caldas, and western slope from Santander south to Cundinamarca).
columbianum Cabanis and Heine, 1859 - Northern Venezuela in central Falcón (Sierra de San Luis) and coastal mountains (Yaracuy, and Carabobo east to Miranda).
cuchiverus Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1949 - Cerro Calentura (northern Amazonas) and Cerro El Negro (north-western Bolívar), in southern Venezuela.
riveti Ménégaux & Hellmayr, 1906 - Western Andes from Colombia (southern from central Chocó) south to north-western Ecuador (south to Pichincha, also El Oro).
bolivianum von Berlepsch, 1907 - Foothills of eastern slope from Ecuador (southern from western Napo) south to central Bolivia (south to Chuquisaca).
rufum (Vieillot, 1818) - Eastern and south-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, south-eastern Bahia and Espirito Santo south to southern Mato Grosso do Sul and northern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, north-eastern Corrientes).
