Subspecies
No obvious close relatives. Validity of subspecies campicola questioned by some authors; may represent only clinal extreme in variation, and this suggested by mensural data, but quantitative analysis of plumage characters required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
campicola Todd, 1915 - South-eastern Bolivia (Chuquisaca, southern Santa Cruz) and western Paraguay.
alaudina Burmeister, 1860 - Southern Bolivia (Tarija), northern and eastern Argentina (Salta and Chaco south to Mendoza, La Pampa and southern Buenos Aires), north-western Uruguay and extreme south-eastern Brazil (western Rio Grande do Sul).
