Subspecies
Phacellodomus erythrophthalmus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Orange-eyed Thornbird (Phacellodomus erythrophthalmus) and Orange-breasted Thornbird (Phacellodomus ferrugineigula) following Stotz et al. (1996) and SACC (2009).
Formerly placed in a monotypic genus Drioctistes. Distinctive. Differs from congeners in terms of plumage and voice. Subspecies ferrugineigula almost certainly a separate species. Very recently reported as co-occurring with nominate in Sío Paulo.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
erythrophthalmus (Wied, 1821) - South-eastern Brazil, from southern Bahia south to north-eastern Sío Paulo.
ferrugineigula (Pelzeln, 1858) - Coastal south-eastern Brazil (São Paulo to southern Rio Grande do Sul).
