Subspecies
Generally considered most closely related to Eremobius and Upucerthia , but has also been thought to be closest to Cinclodes .
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
atacamae (Hellmayr, 1925) - North-central Chile (Atacama, Coquimbo).
melanurus (G. R. Gray, 1846) - Central Chile (Aconcagua south to Colchagua).
