Subspecies
Morphological, vocal and molecular studies indicate that, with exception of Narrow-billed Antwren (Formicivora iheringi), all species placed in current genus form a well-defined group. Considered to belong to a clade along with Restinga Antwren (Formicivora littoralis) and Black-bellied Antwren (Formicivora melanogaster). Forms a superspecies with Restinga Antwren (Formicivora littoralis), with which previously considered conspecific but found to differ in morphology and ecology. Also, has been treated as subspecies of Black-bellied Antwren (Formicivora melanogaster).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
serrana (Hellmayr, 1929) - South-eastern Brazil (eastern Minas Gerais and adjacent central Espírito Santo).
interposita Gonzaga & Pacheco, 1990 - Valley of R Paraiba do Sul in extreme south-eastern Minas Gerais and adjacent north-western Rio de Janeiro.
littoralis Gonzaga & Pacheco, 1990 - Coastal south-eastern Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) and adjacent offshore islands.
