Relationships uncertain.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
strigilatus (Wied, 1831) - North-eastern Brazil (extreme eastern Piauí, central Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte south to northern Minas Gerais).
suspicax Wetmore, 1922 - South-eastern Bolivia (southern Santa Cruz south to Tarija), adjacent Brazil (extreme south-western Mato Grosso, western Mato Grosso do Sul), western Paraguay (west of R Paraguay) and northern Argentina (west of R Paraná, south to Santiago del Estero and Santa Fe).
