Subspecies
Knipolegus signatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) was provisionally split into Andean Black-tyrant (Knipolegus signatus) and Knipolegus cabanisi by Stotz et al. (1996) but this treatment has not been adopted, following SACC (2005).
Taxonomic history complex. Subspecies earlier treated as two distinct species in separate genera, nominate being placed in Ochthodiaeta (now Myiotheretes) and cabanisi in present genus. Subsequent authors generally considered them conspecific, and moved nominate to current genus, although with suggestion by some that they may be separate species. More recently, various authors have treated subspecies either as conspecific or as representing two distinct species forming a superspecies.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- signatus (Taczanowski, 1874) - Extreme southern Ecuador, northern and central Peru (Amazonas to Huánuco, Junín).
- cabanisi Schulz, 1882 - South-eastern Peru (eastern Cuzco, northern Puno), south-eastern Bolivia (Cochabamba, Santa Cruz, Tarija) and north-western Argentina (Jujuy south to Catamarca and Tucumán). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Plumbeous Black-tyrant (Knipolegus cabanisi).
