Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay (B).

Vagrant to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Population
Estimated population is 100,000 - 110,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Mainland subspecies often considered to form a separate species (Rollandia chilensis).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

morrisoni (Simmons, 1962) - Central Peru.
chilensis (Lesson, R, 1828) - North-western Peru and south-eastern Brazil south to Cape Horn. Winters on coast, some southern birds moving north to Paraguay and southern Brazil.
rolland (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) - Falkland Is.
