Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 700 - 1,850 m.
Costa Rica (B), Panama (B).
NE, eastern and central highlands of Costa Rica south to western Panama. Most records on Caribbean slope.

Subspecies
May be conspecific with Gorgeted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus strophium), Black-fronted Wood-Quail (Odontophorus atrifrons), Venezuelan Wood-Quail (Odontophorus columbianus) and Tacarcuna Wood-Quail (Odontophorus dialeucos). Proposed subspecies smithianus, from Dota Mts of Costa Rica, generally considered a melanistic morph.
No subspecies.
