Voice
A whistling chatter.

Subspecies
Often placed in an expanded genus Hypsipetes, but morphological and vocal distinctions seem too great to permit such treatment. Usually treated as conspecific with Sula Golden Bulbul (Thapsinillas longirostris), but differs vocally. Although subspecies name mysticalis often given as mystacalis, original spelling stands, as no official emendment has been made. This subspecies exhibits pronounced morphological and vocal differences from nominate and flavicaudus, and may represent a separate species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

mysticalis (Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841) - Buru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Buru Golden Bulbul (Thapsinillas mysticalis).
affinis (Hombron & Jacquinot, 1841) - Seram.
flavicaudus (Bonaparte, 1850) - Ambon.
