Hilly regions with light woodland, villages, cities, and open areas.

Bangladesh (E) (B), Bhutan (B), Cambodia (B), China (mainland) (E) (B), India (B), Iran [Islamic Republic of] (NB), Laos (B), Malaysia (E) (B), Myanmar (B), Nepal (B), Pakistan (B), Thailand (B), Vietnam (B).

Vagrant to Afghanistan, Brunei Darussalam, Russia (European).

South-eastern Iran, Afghanistan (perhaps irregularly) and Pakistan through Nepal and India to south-central China (Yunnan), Indochina and northern Malay Peninsula.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Habits
Mostly pairs, but small groups at feeding sites.

Food
Carrion.

Voice
Croaks, grunts, hisses and squeals at nest colonies, roosts and carcasses.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus), with which sometimes considered conspecific.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Indian Vulture (Gyps indicus) which has pale brown lesser and median coverts, dark brown remiges and pale brown, almost unstreaked, underparts.
