Nest
A small, flat platform of vine-tendrils and twigs, in an outer horizontal fork of a tree, usually within 10 meters above the ground and often over water.
Eggs (Guide)
1; smooth, lustrous white; ellipsoidal or long-oval; about 35 - 48 x 24 - 30 mm, largest in southern subspecies. Incubation: 12 - 14 days.
Young
Fed by both parents.
Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Megaloprepia. Most closely allied to Scarlet-breasted Fruit-dove (Megaloprepia formosa). Affinities have also been suggested with Maroon-chinned Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus epius) and Black-chinned Fruit-dove (Ramphiculus leclancheri). Most of accepted subspecies are poorly defined, and variation clinal.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
magnificus (Temminck, 1821) - South-eastern Qld, south of Rockhampton, to north-eastern New South Wales.
keri (Mathews, 1912) - North-eastern Qld, from Cairns to Atherton.
assimilis (Gould, 1850) - Cape York Peninsula, south to McIlwraith Ranges.
puella (Lesson & Garnot, 1827) - West Papuan islands and western Irian Jaya.
poliurus (Salvadori, 1878) - South-eastern New Guinea, west to Huon Peninsula in the north and Aroa River in the south.
alaris (Stresemann & Paludan, 1932) - Western Papuan Is, on Waigeo, Misool, Batanta and Salawati.
interpositus (Hartert, E, 1930) - Southern part of Geelvink Bay, Onin Peninsula, lower Snow Mts and eastern along southern coast of New Guinea to R Eilanden.
septentrionalis (Meyer, AB, 1893) - Northern New Guinea from R Memberamo east to Astrolabe Bay, and islands of Yapen, Kairiru, Manam, Karkar and Bagabag.
