Probably forms a superspecies with Red-winged Pytilia (Pytilia phoenicoptera) and Red-billed Pytilia (Pytilia lineata) was previously thought to form a superspecies with Green-winged Pytilia (Pytilia melba), but such a relationship not supported by results of molecular-genetic studies. Male having red wings, as well as red face, described as Pytilia lopezi (type from near Bunda, in Central African Republic), but considered a morph or, possibly, a subspecies of present species. Further study is required.
