Subspecies
Considered to form a superspecies with White-headed Babbler (Turdoides leucocephala) and Arrow-marked Babbler (Turdoides jardineii) and sometimes treated as conspecific with former.
Proposed subspecies uamensis (Cameroon and adjacent western Central African Republic) synonymized with cinerea.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
platycirca (Swainson, 1837) - Southern Mauritania and Senegal east to south-eastern Mali, south-western Niger border area and western Nigeria.
plebejus (Cretzschmar, 1828) - North-eastern Nigeria east to central and southern Sudan.
cinerea (Heuglin, 1856) - South-eastern Nigeria east to southern Sudan and south-western Ethiopia, south to Cameroon, north-eastern DRCongo, Uganda and western Kenya.
