Has been thought possibly to form a superspecies with Toro Olive Greenbul (Phyllastrephus hypochloris), and sometimes considered conspecific, but morphological and vocal differences suggest that they are better treated as distinct species. Also, both sometimes considered to form a superspecies with Cameroon Olive Greenbul (Phyllastrephus poensis) and Sassi's Olive Greenbul (Phyllastrephus lorenzi), but this seems implausible, and relationship with latter, at least, of these two does not seem close.
