Habitat
Middle strata and canopy of evergreen rainforest, semi-evergreen rainforest. Most numerous in undisturbed forest, but nevertheless occurs in lightly and sometimes heavily logged forest. From sea-level - 2,500 m.

C�te dIvoire (B) (NB), Ghana (B) (NB), Liberia (B) (NB), Rwanda (B) (NB), Sierra Leone (B) (NB), Uganda (B) (NB).

Unknown to Guinea.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through commercial logging, clearance for agriculture and subsistence-level timber harvesting, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Grey-headed Bush-shrike (Malaconotus blanchoti) and Monteiro's Bush-Shrike (Malaconotus monteiri), with Fiery-breasted Bush-shrike (Malaconotus cruentus) sometimes included in same group. Voice suggests that it is closest to Fiery-breasted Bush-shrike (Malaconotus cruentus), with which it overlaps in range.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

lagdeni (Sharpe, 1884) - South-eastern Sierra Leone east to Ghana, possibly to Togo.
centralis Neumann, 1920 - Eastern DRCongo, western Uganda and western Rwanda.
