Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Togo, Uganda.

Vagrant to Kenya.

Sierra Leone and Liberia east to western Uganda and eastern Zaire; also north-western Angola.
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 10,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Spizaetus nanus, Spizaetus lanceolatus, Spizaetus philippensis, Spizaetus pinskeri, Spizaetus nipalensis, Spizaetus alboniger and Spizaetus bartelsi (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) and Spizaetus cirrhatus and Spizaetus floris (Gjershaug et al. 2004) have been transferred into the genus Nisaetus following Haring et al. (2006). Spizaetus africanus and Hieraaetus fasciatus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have both been transferred into Aquila, also following Haring et al. (2006); and Hieraaetus kienerii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been transferred into the resurrected genus Lophotriorchis.

The only African member of the genus (as presently defined); previously placed in Hieraaetus, or more often in its own genus Cassinaetus.

No subspecies.
