Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Angola, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sâo Tomé e Principe (B), Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda.

Introduced to Liberia.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status LC
Trapping for the cage-bird trade is the main threat.

Habits
In fast-flying flocks of up to 30 birds. In pairs while breeding.

Food
Grass seeds, fruit, some cultivated crops.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • pullarius (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Patchily in Guinea, Sierra Leone and northern Ivory Coast, and from Ghana east to Sudan and southern into western Zaire and north-western Angola, mainly north of Congo basin (southern boundaries unclear). Also Sío Tomé.
  • ugandae Neumann, 1908   -  Eastern Zaire to western Ethiopia, western Kenya and north-western Tanzania.
