Subspecies
Not very closely related to congeners, probably closest to the group comprising White-headed Barbet (Lybius leucocephalus), Zambian Barbet (Lybius chaplini) and Red-faced Barbet (Lybius rubrifacies). Subspecies ill-defined, with some mosaic variation, and clinal variation in colour intensity.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
buchanani Hartert, 1924 - Southern Mauritania and Mali east to southern Chad, and south to southern Sahel region (east to north-central Nigeria).
rubescens (Temminck, 1823) - Sahel fringe from Gambia and Sierra Leone east to central Nigeria, northern Cameroon, Central African Republic and north-central Zaire, reaching coast from Ivory Coast to Nigeria.
vieilloti (Leach, 1815) - Central Sudan and north-western Ethiopia south to north-eastern Zaire, southern Sudan and western Ethiopia.
