Proposed subspecies hybrida (Niger Delta) and chapini (south-eastern Cameroon east to central Zaire) considered indistinguishable from, respectively, nominate and ansorgii.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

• hirsuta (Swainson, 1821)   -  Sierra Leone east to south-central Nigeria (Niger Delta).
• flavipunctata Verreaux, J & Verreaux, E, 1855   -  From at least south-eastern Nigeria through Cameroon (except south-east) to central Gabon.
• ansorgii Shelley, 1895   -  South-eastern Cameroon east to western Kenya, south to eastern Congo, central Zaire and north-western Tanzania.
• angolensis Neumann, 1908   -  Southern Gabon and southern Congo south to north-western Angola and southern Zaire.
