Subspecies
Affiliations of genus uncertain. Recent molecular-genetic analyses indicate that it does not belong with present family, and may be better placed with tanagers (Thraupidae).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
similis d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837 - Eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz; one record Bení), central and eastern Brazil (northern Mato Grosso and Bahia south to Mato Grosso do Sul and central and north-eastern Sío Paulo), eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (eastern Formosa and Misiones south to Santa Fe, Entre Ríos and north-eastern Buenos Aires) and northern Uruguay.
ochraceiventris von Berlepsch, 1912 - South-eastern Brazil (Paraná and south-eastern Sío Paulo south to Rio Grande do Sul).
