South-eastern Colombia (eastern from lowlands of Caquetá and Putumayo) south through eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru (south to Puno), and western Brazil south of R Amazon (east to middle R Juruá and middle R Purús).

No subspecies.
Formerly placed with Opal-rumped Tanager (Tangara velia) in a separate genus, Tanagrella. Molecular-genetic data indicate that the two are sister-species, and that Paradise Tanager (Tangara chilensis) is sister to both.
