Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Burmese Myna (Acridotheres burmannicus).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
melanopterus (Daudin, 1800) - Java (except south-eastern part) and Madura I.
tricolor (Horsfield, 1821) - South-eastern Java (east of Tosari). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-backed Myna (Acridotheres tricolor).
tertius (Hartert, 1896) - Bali (including Nusa Penida) and Lombok. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-rumped Myna (Acridotheres tertius).
Similar Species
Bali Myna (Leucopsar rothschildi) which has black restricted to tips of wings and tail and much longer, white crest.
