Estimated population is 50 - 249 (2010) and fluctuating.

Predation by rats and feral cats are the main threats. Avian diseases may also be a potential threat.

Voice
A wide variety of discordant calls. Territorial call repeatedly uttered by the male during the breeding season rendered as 'kakerori'.
