Subspecies
Vocally distinctive subspecies leymebambae may be a separate species. Bolivian birds slightly darker, but differences probably clinal. Full species status has also been proposed for rara, mainly on basis of plumage differences. Birds from Norte de Santander, in Colombia, tentatively placed with rara, but racial affiliation uncertain.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
ferrugineipectus (Sclater, 1857) - Northern Colombia (Santa Marta Mts) and northern and western Venezuela (coastal mountains, and Andes from southern Lara south to central Mérida).
rara Hellmayr & Madarász, 1914 - Perijá Mts, and eastern Andes of Colombia on western slope (in Cundinamarca) and, probably this subspecies, on eastern slope (in Norte de Santander).
leymebambae Carriker, 1933 - Pacific slope in north-western Peru (Piura) and from southern Amazonas (southern and east of R Marańón) south to western Bolivia (La Paz). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufous-breasted Antpitta (Grallaricula leymebambae).
