Size

First Described (Guide)
(Gmelin, 1788)

Habitat
Evergreen, moist deciduous, monsoon and semi-evergreen forest, forest edge, scrub and agricultural areas. From sea-level - 800 m, occasionally to 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Indonesia (B), Timor-Leste (B) (NB).

Introduced to Singapore (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status CR
Exploitation for internal and international trade, habitat destruction through large-scale logging and conversion to agriculture, persecution as a crop-pest, are the main threats.

Voice
Loud and very raucous. Often gives single harsh screech but also sweeter whistles and squeaky notes.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) and Blue-eyed Cockatoo (Cacatua ophthalmica).

Possible subspecies djampeana and occidentalis now regarded as synomyms of nominate and subspecies parvula respectively.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • sulphurea (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Sulawesi, and offlying islands of Muna, Butung, Tukangbesi, Tanahjampea, Kayuadi, Kalao, Madu and Kalaotoa.
  • abbotti (Oberholser, 1917)   -  Masalembu Besar I (Java Sea).
  • parvula (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Sumbawa, Komodo, Padar, Rinca, Flores, Pantar, Alor, Semau and Timor (Lesser Sundas). Also Lombok, where probably extinct, and Nusa Penida.
  • citrinocristata (Fraser, 1844)   -  Sumba (Lesser Sundas).


Similar Species
Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) which is much larger and has white skin around eye.
