Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, lowland dry and moist shrubland. From sea-level - 1,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan (B), Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Sometimes combined with Black-bellied Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus diardi), Chestnut-bellied Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus sumatranus) and Blue-faced Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus viridirostris) in a separate genus Rhopodytes.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • tristis (Lesson, 1830)   -  Northern India from outer Himalayas (to 1800 m) and Kumaon south to Madhya Pradesh, east through Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan to Assam and Bangladesh.
  • saliens (Mayr, 1938)   -  Northern Myanmar, northern Thailand, northern Indochina and southern China (Yunnan).
  • hainanus (Hartert, 1910)   -  Hainan.
  • longicaudatus Blyth, 1842   -  Southern Myanmar, southern Thailand and southern Indochina to Malaysia.
  • elongatus S. Müller, 1835   -  Sumatra.
  • kangeangensis (Vorderman, 1893)   -  Kangean Is.
