Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Brown-headed Barbet (Psilopogon zeylanicus), and often treated as conspecific in past, but no apparent hybridization in the narrow area of sympatry in northern India and south-western Nepal. Possibly related also to White-cheeked Barbet (Psilopogon viridis) and Green-eared Barbet (Psilopogon faiostrictus), but not very closely. Subspecies hodgsoni tends towards nominate subspecies in Peninsular Malaysia. Other forms described include rana (Kumaon to west-central Nepal), kutru (Orissa) and intermedia (Myanmar to Indochina), but all now included within hodgsoni.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
hodgsoni (Bonaparte, 1850) - North-western India and Nepal east to south-central China (western Yunnan), south to Orissa, Bangladesh, Manipur, southern Myanmar, south-central Vietnam and northern Peninsular Malaysia.
lineatus (Vieillot, 1816) - Java and Bali (Indonesia).
