Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Streak-breasted Woodpecker (Picus viridanus) and sometimes considered conspecific, but may be separated by habitat, although some possible overlap in this respect. Further study is needed. Southern and eastern populations tend to have more bronze tinge on upperparts, and rump colour tends more towards orange in east, but much individual variation, and racial separation unwarranted.
Proposed subspecies eisenhoferi (northern Thailand), connectens (Langkawi I, off north-western Peninsular Malaysia) and limitans (Kangean I) considered unacceptable.
