Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 500 - 2,000 m, occasionally to 3,050 m.
Ecuador, Peru.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Stripe-crowned Warbler (Basileuterus culicivorus), and has been considered conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- nitidior Chapman, 1924 - South-western Ecuador (El Oro and Loja) and adjacent north-western Peru (Tumbes).
- trifasciatus Taczanowski, 1881 - North-western Peru (Piura south to La Libertad).
