Understorey of broadleaf evergreen forest and overgrown forest gaps. From 1,600 - 2,500 m.

Range (Guide)

Vietnam (B) (NB).

Unknown to China (mainland).

Southern China (south-eastern Yunnan, north-western Guangxi) and northern Vietnam (western Tonkin).

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status VU
Deforestation due to expansion of agriculture is the main threat.

No subspecies.

Spelaeornis chocolatinus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Naga Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis chocolatinus), Grey-bellied Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis reptatus), Chin Hills Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis oatesi) and Pale-throated Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis kinneari) following Collar (2006).

Formerly treated as conspecific with Naga Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis chocolatinus), Grey-bellied Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis reptatus) and Chin Hills Wren-Babbler (Spelaeornis oatesi).
