Usually singly or in pairs.

Voice
Song is crombec-like: high-pitched, frequently repeated 'tchee-tchee-tchee', more varied and warbling in the north of its range.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-vented Eremomela (Eremomela flavicrissalis). Subspecies salvadorii sometimes treated as a separate species.

Other proposed subspecies are karamojensis (from north-eastern Uganda, northern Kenya and southern Somalia) and crawfurdi (south-western Kenya, north-western Tanzania and Rwanda), both synonymized with griseoflava; sharpei (south-western South Africa), synonymized with saturatior; and viriditincta (described from south-western Zambia), considered inseparable from helenorae.

The following 12 subspecies are recognised:

  • alexanderi Sclater, WL & Mackworth-Praed, 1918   -  Extreme southern Mauritania, northern Senegal, southern Mali, Burkina Faso, southern Niger (south from Air) and extreme northern Nigeria east to western Sudan (Darfur and Kordofan).
  • griseoflava Heuglin, 1862   -  North-eastern, central and southern Sudan, northern Eritrea, north-western Somalia, central and southern Ethiopia, eastern Uganda, western Kenya, north-western Tanzania (east to Mwanza) and eastern Rwanda.
  • salvadorii Reichenow, 1891   -  Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo to south-eastern Gabon, central plateau of Angola and western Zambia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Salvadori's Eremomela (Eremomela salvadorii).
  • abdominalis Reichenow, 1905   -  Central, southern and south-eastern Kenya and northern Tanzania (south to Tabora and Bahi).
  • polioxantha Sharpe, 1883   -  Eastern and southern Tanzania (southern from Iringa and Kidugallo), south-eastern DRCongo (southern Katanga), Zambia (except western and south-west), Malawi, Zimbabwe (except north-west), eastern Botswana, western and southern Mozambique, north-eastern South Africa (northern and eastern northern Province south to north-eastern KwaZulu-Natal) and Swaziland.
  • puellula Grote, 1929   -  Coastal south-western Angola (Benguela, Namibe).
  • helenorae Alexander, 1899   -  Southern Angola (southern Cuando Cubango), extreme north-eastern Namibia (Caprivi), south-western Zambia, north-western Zimbabwe and northern and north-eastern Botswana.
  • icteropygialis (Lafresnaye, 1839)   -  Namibia and western and central Botswana.
  • perimacha Oberholser, 1920   -  Southern Botswana and northern South Africa (Northern Cape east to western northern Province).
  • saturatior Ogilvie-Grant, 1910   -  Southern and central South Africa (Transvaal highveld and western Free State south to western Cape and western eastern Cape).
  • sharpei Reichenow, 1905   -  Southern Angola, northern Namibia, western and central Botswana.
  • viriditincta White, CMN, 1961   -  North-eastern Namibia, north-eastern Botswana, south-western Zambia and north-western Zimbabwe.
