Subspecies
Distinctive subspecies ockendeni merits further investigation and may possibly be a separate species. Geographical variation otherwise appears somewhat clinal.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
cacozelus (Bangs, 1898) - Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in northern Colombia.
clarus Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1953 - Perijá Mts, on north-eastern Colombia-western Venezuela border.
quindio Chapman, 1925 - Southern and western Colombia and northern Ecuador.
gigas Fraser, 1841 - Eastern Andes of Venezuela and Colombia.
gigantodes Cabanis, 1873 - Southern Ecuador south to central Peru.
ockendeni Hellmayr, 1906 - South-eastern Peru.
fuscater Lafresnaye & d'Orbigny, 1837 - Western Bolivia.
