Subspecies
Precise relationships within genus unclear from analysis of mitochondrial DNA. Possibly sister to Short-crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus ferox) and Sooty-crowned Flycatcher (Myiarchus phaeocephalus) (perhaps also with Apical Flycatcher (Myiarchus apicalis)).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
caribbaeus Hellmayr, 1925 - Northern and western Venezuela (northern coastal range in Aragua and Distrito Federal, mountains of Sucre and northern Monagas, Andes of Lara and Trujillo).
cephalotes Taczanowski, 1879 - Colombia (central range of Andes), Peru (slopes of eastern and central cordilleras) and Bolivia (Yungas).
