Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Rufous-sided Crake (Laterallus melanophaius), which replaces this species east of Andes. However, may be closer to Grey-breasted Crake (Laterallus exilis).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cinereiceps (Lawrence, 1875) - South-eastern Honduras and Caribbean slope of Nicaragua through Costa Rica to north-western Panama (western Veraguas).
albigularis (Lawrence, 1861) - Pacific lowlands of south-western Costa Rica (Gulf of Nicoya) through Panama and northern and western Colombia to western Ecuador.
cerdaleus Wetmore, 1958 - Eastern Colombia (Córdoba to Santa Marta region).
