Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Violet-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia violiceps). Until mid-20th century, holotype was believed to represent an aberrant individual of Violet-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia violiceps), due to sexual and age-related variation in coloration of crown in both species. In addition, forms described as "Cyanomyia guerrerensis", "Uranomitra derneddei" and "Uranomitra atricapilla" all refer to present species but were earlier considered synonyms of Violet-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia violiceps). When finally recognized as a valid taxon, it was considered a subspecies of Violet-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia violiceps). However, recent morphological and biogeographical studies, including discovery of zone of sympatry in Guerrero but no known hybridization, confirm validity of the species. Subspecies wagneri sometimes considered a separate species, but morphological differences slight. Birds from central Oaxaca have been awarded subspecies rowleyi, but probably not valid, due to strong intergradation of nominate and subspecies wagneri in zone of supposed secondary contact. Nominate subspecies shows disjunct distribution, with gap in eastern Oaxaca.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- viridifrons (Elliot, 1871) - Southern Mexico: eastern Guerrero to western Oaxaca; eastern Oaxaca to central Chiapas.
- wagneri (Phillips, 1964) - Southern Mexico: central and southern Oaxaca. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Cinnamon-sided Hummingbird (Amazilia wagneri).
- villadai Peterson & Navarro, 2000 - South-eastern Oaxaca, Chiapas (south-eastern Mexico).
