Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Phloeoceastes with seven other species, all of which are now lumped into Campephilus. Subspecies splendens, sometimes regarded as a separate species, appears to differ vocally. Further study is needed.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
splendens Hargitt, 1889 - Panama to western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Splendid Woodpecker (Campephilus splendens).
haematogaster (Tschudi, 1844) - Eastern Colombia to eastern Peru.
